Losing Hair? Don't Trust Rosemary Oil. Here's What Research Actually Says.

Your hairline is receding. Your feed is full of miracle oils. Here is the uncomfortable truth: one small trial made rosemary oil famous, while the treatments with real trials behind them get ignored.

The rosemary oil story is thinner than your hair

A single small trial compared rosemary oil to 2% minoxidil. It got shared a million times. One small trial is not proof. It is a hint.

Meanwhile minoxidil has decades of trials behind it. The internet picked the underdog story. Science picked the boring one.

What the research actually supports

Topical minoxidil works. It is the most studied regrowth treatment you can buy without a prescription. Use it consistently. Stopping usually means losing the gains.

For men, oral finasteride works. It blocks the hormone signal that shrinks hair follicles. It has large trials behind it. Talk to a doctor about the trade-offs before you start.

The combination beats either one alone. A 2025 meta-analysis pooled 7 randomized trials with 396 patients. Topical finasteride plus minoxidil added 9.22 more hairs per square centimeter than minoxidil alone. The reviewers rated the evidence as moderate certainty. What you can skip

The one worth watching

Clascoterone 5% is a topical androgen-receptor blocker. It posted positive Phase 3 results in December 2025. The maker plans an FDA filing in the first quarter of 2027. It is not approved yet. Do not buy anything claiming to sell it now. Details here: Practical Dermatology.

You are not alone in this

About half of European men show visible hair loss by age 50. The name is androgenetic alopecia. It is the most common type. Knowing the name helps you ignore the noise. Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry, 2025.
